Hero Image — Approaching Madinah
The Journey That Began Long Before the Flight
There are journeys we plan with maps.
There are journeys we prepare for with savings, itineraries, and airline tickets.
And then there are journeys that begin quietly in the heart, long before we ever pack a suitcase.
For me, travelling to Madinah belonged to the second kind.
Long before I boarded the aircraft, I had heard countless stories about the city from family members, friends, colleagues, and fellow Muslims. Some spoke about its peace. Others spoke about the kindness of its people. Many simply smiled and said,
"You'll understand when you arrive."
At the time, I wasn't entirely sure what they meant.
Like many travellers, I imagined another beautiful city waiting beyond the airport.

I couldn't have been more mistaken.
The flight crossed deserts that seemed endless. Looking through the aircraft window, I watched mountains gradually replace green landscapes. The colours below changed from deep earth tones to endless shades of gold and brown.
There was a strange beauty in the simplicity of the Arabian landscape. No dense forests. No winding rivers. No towering waterfalls. Yet everything felt powerful. It reminded me that beauty doesn't always need abundance. Sometimes it lives in silence.
As the aircraft began its descent, I caught my first glimpse of Madinah. From above, the city appeared calm and carefully planned. Wide roads stretched between neighbourhoods. Palm trees stood in orderly rows. Sunlight reflected softly from cream-coloured buildings.
Walking through the airport, I noticed something I hadn't expected. People were arriving from every corner of the world. Families speaking languages I couldn't recognize. Pilgrims wearing different styles of clothing. Despite our differences, everyone seemed to share the same destination.

Outside the airport, the warm desert air greeted me immediately. It felt different from the humid weather I had known in Bangladesh and Malaysia. The air was dry. The sky looked impossibly clear.
As the taxi began moving toward the city centre, I quietly watched the scenery pass by. Date palm plantations appeared along the roadside. Traffic moved calmly. There was no rush. It felt as though the city had chosen a slower rhythm.
Every traveller carries expectations.
Sometimes destinations exceed them.

Sometimes reality feels different from imagination.
Madinah wasn't trying to exceed expectations.
It gently replaced them with something else.
Peace.
Not the kind of peace that comes from silence alone, but the kind that slowly settles inside you without announcing its arrival.
As our vehicle continued toward the heart of the city, I looked out of the window and realized something unexpected.
This journey wasn't only about reaching a destination.
It was about learning how certain places can quietly change the way we think, long before they ask us to change anything else.
And somehow, before I had even reached my hotel, Madinah had already begun that conversation.
